Higher education provides deep knowledge and understanding about the nation, society and the global scenario in order to develop new learners with information on different ways of life. It mainly develops the ability of the students to question and seek truth and make him/her competent to critique on contemporary issues. In this present era, some issues are emerging with the rapid growth of population. The present paper depicts the role of higher education in the Indian context and the implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) in higher education. We have made an attempt to explain the basic principles of TQM in terms of SWOC analysis (Strength, Weakness, Opportunities & Challenges) of an organization which is the basic requirement for its development. At the end of the paper, Deming's idea of implementing TQM in the educational set up with reference to the PDCA cycle (Plan, Do, Check & Action) has been analyzed.
