W-tube Gas Experiments: Small scale laboratory approach

Abstract

In this article we have performed gas experiments using W-shaped glass tube in which whole experimental procedure, including generation, collection and testing of gases, can be performed in a single procedural step. The W–shaped blended glass tube with its two outer sides and middle side is a suitable devised apparatus for both generation and testing of gas on its two outer sides. In one of the outer sides of W-tube a small amount of test reagent is transferred and on the other outer side liquid reagent that tests the presence or absence of the evolved gas is transferred. The reagent that reacts with the test sample is then transferred into the first side and made airtight by putting finger on its mouth and the generated gas is bubbled through the liquid reagent in the other side showing the chemical change. The best part of this method is the consumption of lesser reagents, generation of requisite amount of gas and avoidance of complex procedure of bubbling of generated gas through testing reagent.
