Abstract

English as an international language is regarded as a ‘skill’ rather than a subject. In India, English is generally studied as a second language. Besides being an international language, English achieves the status of a ‘window language’ and a ‘library language’. With the advent of modernization and technology, skills in English language is necessary not only for international communication but also for staying a step ahead in the field of employment and personality grooming. The acquisition of English involves two skills: Receptive skills and productive skills; Listening and Reading are regarded as Receptive skills whereas Speaking and Writing are the Productive skills. Since the years, it has been a matter of concern for the educationists to investigate the existing situation of acquiring competencies in English from the very Elementary level to the Undergraduate level. The present study is basically a review of the existing literature in the area of different skills and methods of teaching involved in English language. It aims to synthesize the previously conducted studies trace a knowledge gap for conducting further researches.
