Architecture Education in India – a search for its roots
The paper examines the history and evolution of architecture education in India, particularly in the context of traditional Indian building knowledge and practices. It argues that the academic content and teaching methods of contemporary architecture education need to place more emphasis upon the traditional philosophy, principles and practices of building. The discussion illustrates that, historically speaking -architecture education and training findsits roots in the Western European models of teaching that were imported in colonial India for the production of technicians and draughtsmen, whoserole was limited to drafting the designs prepared by foreign architects and engineers. The central main argument makes a case for a renewed and in-depth search for the roots of building design education in the traditional Indian context. It is suggested that some of the key aspects of the traditional building knowledge systems may still hold relevance and provide a more holistic understanding of man and its environment, reinforce the nature-culture-people linkages and clarify the essential relationship between microcosm and macrocosm in a design process.A more radical approach to education will involve developing meaningful linkages between the contemporary learning and the traditional roots.
