Hyolaryngeal Measures Of Swallow Using Digital Accelerometry In Children With Cerebral Palsy
AbstractThe current study investigated the hyolaryngeal elevation during swallowing act in 62 children, out of which 10 are children with cerebral palsy (CP), and 52 are typically developing children (TDC) age ranged between 4 to 10 years. The amplitude and duration of the hyolaryngeal movement were evaluated using the Digital Accelerometry for Swallowing Imaging (DASI) during the swallow of 5ml of water for children in both the groups. The results indicated that the amplitude of the hyolaryngeal movement in children with CP was significantly higher (30.16µV) compared to TDC (17.14µV). However, the duration of hyolaryngeal excursion did not exhibit any statistically significant difference between the groups. The remarkable increase in the amplitude of the hyolaryngeal complex movement in children with CP than TDC is due to the presence of high instability in the mechanics of a laryngeal system of CP secondary to the neuromuscular issues. Hence, the evaluation of hyolaryngeal excursion using DASI can provide additional information to the existing objective evaluation of the swallowing mechanism. More studies are required in these lines to evaluate the efficiency of DASI in the accurate measurement of hyolaryngeal excursion.
