Media and Ethics: A Philosophical Reflection
The terms ‘media’ and ‘ethics’ are two different branches of disciplines. Media appears as a business organization and ethics appears as a normative study. The former deals with profit and loss and the latter deals with right and wrong; good and bad etc. The strategy of this paper is to show in what sense
In what sense ethics matters to media. Media as a professional organism is governed by rules like every other profession. A journalist as a media profession must act according to the rules of media. But such rules seem inadequate to a media professional to make full justice to the people. A journalist must enjoy freedom and autonomy of the will of individual. Without enjoying freedom and autonomy of will, his action cannot be morally evaluated. Therefore, when we talk of media and ethics, we have to keep in mind. There are other moral virtues which must be acquired by a media professional. These are accountability and responsibility. Accountability and responsibility can coexist with freedom and autonomy in ethical and moral sense. If a journalist have all such ethical and moral insights and do acquire these as the quality of the soul, then only in such a case a media professional will benefit the society at large.
